France is in turmoil, and Donald Trump saw an opportunity.

(Asian independent)   The protesters’ grievances are not hidden. Students took to the streets over poor school conditions and teacher shortages. Teachers, parents and trade unions joined, and it became a nationwide mobilisation. Later, farmers and climate activists marched alongside unions demanding higher wages and pensions, lower prices and protected public services.

Crumbling classrooms and unaffordable groceries are the stated causes.
Trump ignored all of it. He declared the unrest wasn’t about schools at all, but about Islam wanting to take over France. He did this without elaborating or providing any evidence, and no link has been established between the student movement and any religious or identity-based demands. He was not analysing France. He was overwriting it, replacing what the protesters actually say with a story that suits him.

Critics see a calculation. His post came ahead of tough midterm elections, after MAGA ( Make America Great Again) commentators had spent days circulating videos of the French unrest. The charge is that French teenagers’ anger over their schools was “repurposed” as campaign material for American voters, and that a real grievance was treated as a prop. Motive is an inference, but the timing makes it hard to dismiss.

The riots are real and the damage is serious. Government buildings were torched, and one police officer and one protester died. Those who looted and burned should face the courts, as Macron has promised. But violence by some does not justify a false account of everyone’s demands. Turning a protest about school budgets into a clash of civilisations insults the students and workers who marched, and it distorts the debate France actually needs to have.

Trump’s defenders say presidents routinely comment on foreign events, and that immigration, integration and public order are genuine debates in France that the violence brings to the surface. Some commentators also argue the protests are partly a political push by the French left.
