Before India celebrated its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, Indian security agencies carried out a massive nationwide operation across 14 states. Over 200 operatives linked to the ISI-backed Shahzad Bhatti Network were arrested.

Security forces recovered weapons, live cartridges, improvised explosives, and hand grenades bearing official Pakistan Ordnance Factory markings. While the threat originated from a Pakistan-based group, the operation highlighted a painful reality: the network relied on local conduits inside India to conduct surveillance, plant cameras near defense bases, and carry out attacks.

External Sponsorship vs. Internal Vulnerability

The external enemy provides the weapons, funding, and strategy. However, those plans only succeed if people within the country agree to carry them out. When local citizens act as spies, store explosives, or facilitate targeted attacks for money, they turn against their own society.
Cross-border networks exploit local grievances, economic hardship, and social divisions to recruit inside national borders.

Why the Internal Threat is More Dangerous

(1) Infiltration and Espionage
Local operatives blend into daily life, making them far harder to detect than foreign infiltrators.
(2) Erosion of Trust
Internal betrayals weaken community bonds and strain social cohesion.
(3) Logistic Support
Without local safe houses, reconnaissance, and transport, external terrorist networks cannot function effectively.

Dismantling external networks is essential for national security. However, addressing “internal vulnerabilities through vigilance, stronger community ties, and preventing radicalization”, is what truly protects a nation long term.
