The opening over of the three-match T20 International series at Chelmsford felt like a nightmare for India, Lauren Bell, a fast bowler rocked India with 2 for 2 in the first over. Dismissing Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma.
Jemimah Jessica Rodrigues stepped up and turned her batting into a showcase of tactical brilliance, youthful energy, and a Player of the Match. It was worthy of masterclass. Shee is wonderful touch player. Despite being rocked to 2 for 2 within six balls, India managed to win with a crushing 38-run victory over England.

While the win secures a 1-0 series lead, its true value lies in the statement India made ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup: this team has depth, fearlessness, and a new generation of players ready to take the world stage by storm.

The Counter-Attack That Stunned Chelmsford

Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia, faced with a disaster scenario, the duo didn’t just absorb the pressure, they shattered it. Rodrigues played an absolute gem of an innings, anchoring the team while aggressively putting the English bowlers to the sword. Smashing 69 off just 40 balls, Rodrigues found the perfect partner in Bhatia (54 off 40).
Together, they put up a devastating 126-run partnership.
Rodrigues was undoubtedly the spine of India’s robust 188-7 total, pacing her innings beautifully, picking gaps at will, and accelerating with precise, modern T20 intent.

A Live Wire in the Field

India’s total was immense, England did well to keep the score below 200. But defending it required defensive discipline. This is where Rodrigues is one of India’s best fielders, she was a literal live wire across the turf.
Whether cutting off certain boundaries in the ring or chasing down hard-hit ball at the deep midwicket boundary, her energy was infectious. It culminated in a crucial, highly composed catch in the deep to dismiss England captain Heather Knight just as she was looking to build momentum. Her clinical catching and ground coverage stifled England’s run chase.

The New Guard Delivers

India’s fresh talent proved that the future has arrived. The spotlight belonged firmly to debutant Nandani Sharma, who delivered a dream performance under high pressure.
Chasing 189, England’s Amy Jones was threatening to play a match-winning cameo, launching a brutal 67 off 48 balls. However, Sharma turned the match on its head in the 16th over. Mixing her pace beautifully, she deceived Jones into a skyed catch to deep midwicket. The very next ball, she outsmarted Dani Gibson to put herself on a hat-trick.
Sharma finished an unforgettable international debut with figures of 3 for 34, showcasing a maturity and variation, specifically her slower balls, that left England’s lower order completely clueless.

Alongside her, left-arm spinner Shree Charani was the picture of control, choking the English middle-order during the middle overs and finishing with an incredibly economical 1 for 25 off her 4 overs.

The Takeaway

England crumbled at the back end of the chase, losing 4 wickets for just 9 runs in 11 balls, but the foundation of that collapse was built by India’s constant, athletic pressure.
With Jemimah Rodrigues leading by example with bat and ball, and the newcomers immediately making their presence felt, India enters the rest of the English summer looking incredibly balanced, dangerous, and very much like World Cup contenders.
England will make changes and formidable Nat Sciver- Brunt , captain who was rested will probably return to bolster the batting. This England team will come back stronger, as this side resembled as B team as many key players were missing.

India 188-7 20 overs
England 150-8 20 overs
India win by 38 runs
