(Asian independent)   The passing of Nana Patekar leaves an irreplaceable void in Indian art and public life. While cinema remembered him as a fiery, unmatched performer, his true legacy transcended the silver screen. He was a rarity, an artist who used his stature to actively confront structural inequality, champion Ambedkarite ideals, and challenge the deep-seated scourge of caste-based discrimination.

Living the Ambedkarite Philosophy

For Nana Patekar, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was not merely a historical figure to quote, but an ideological compass. In a society often reluctant to directly address caste, Patekar spoke openly about Ambedkar’s vision of structural reform, education, and dignity for the marginalized.
His belief in Ambedkar’s anti-caste philosophy was expressed not just through political commentary, but through an unwavering commitment to human dignity:

(1) Rejecting Caste Identity.
Patekar consistently challenged the social stratification of caste, using public platforms to argue that human worth must be judged solely by capability, integrity, and labor, rather than birth or lineage.

(2) The Power of Cinema as Resistance. In Pa. Ranjith’s anti-caste masterpiece Kaala (2018), Patekar took on the role of Haridev Abhayankar, the embodiment of land-grabbing, casteist hegemony. By stepping into a role that directly contrasted with Ambedkarite politics, he helped anchor a narrative that brought themes of land rights, urban segregation, and Dalit resistance into mainstream Indian cinema.

(3)Empowerment Over Charity.
Aligned with Ambedkar’s call to “Educate, Agitate, Organize,” Patekar’s social initiative, the Naam Foundation, focused on sustainable empowerment rather than mere financial aid. By supporting marginalized agrarian communities, small landholders, and rural women in drought-hit regions, he worked to build the self-reliance and economic independence necessary to break cycles of social vulnerability.

A Legacy of Courage and Conscience

Patekar’s screen presence reflected his real-world conviction. Whether through his sharp, anti-establishment monologues in 1990s cinema or his quiet, grounded social work off-screen, he consistently questioned social apathy, institutional corruption, and caste-based prejudice.
Nana Patekar belonged to a rare tradition of cultural figures who refused to stay silent on the fault lines of society. In remembering him, Indian cinema bids farewell to a master craftsman, and the movement for social justice loses a fearless, resonant voice.
May his commitment to equality and dignity continue to inspire.
