The August 2022 tragedy in Jalore, Rajasthan, where a nine-year-old Dalit boy named Indra Meghwal died after being beaten by his teacher, reveals a harsh truth: formal education does not guarantee moral growth. The teacher’s violent reaction to a child drinking water from a pot reserved for upper-caste staff shows how deeply rooted caste bias can remain, even in those who are meant to educate.
Schools should be safe places where children are treated equally and protected. Teachers are expected to teach kindness and fairness alongside academic subjects. However, when a teacher brings caste prejudice into the classroom, the school becomes a dangerous place for vulnerable students.
This incident shows that literacy and academic degrees are not enough to eliminate social prejudice.
True education must teach empathy, equality, and respect for human dignity. When an educated person inflicts harm over caste, it shows that our education system focuses too much on degrees and not enough on basic humanity.
To prevent such tragedies, society must ensure that schools are truly safe, inclusive, and strictly accountable, so that no child is ever harmed for who they are.
