SENIOR JOURNALIST BALJIT SINGH BRAR RECOGNISED BY SIKH COMMUNITY IN LEICESTER UK

Panthic sewadar, Senior Journalist and Editor of Daily Punja Times, Jalandhar, Punjab published in Punjabi and English in India and Canada was recognised during his short visit to at the very impressive GNG football ground headquarters at Riverside, Braunstone Lane East, Braunstone Town, Leicester, Le3 2FD on Tuesday 26th May 2026.

Dr. Charanpreet Singh Johal, director of Kohinoor Radio and Chairperson of GNG FC welcomed everyone to the special gathering of nearly 100 people. The Right worshipful The Lord mayor of Leicester Councillor Kulwinder Singh Johal has created history by becoming the first turban wearing baptised Sikh to become The Lord Mayor of Leicester -the first citizen of city with a population over 400 000 people of this muti-cultural city with many religions and languages, which an great example to others in how to live happily side by side. In front of packed room The Lord Mayor of Leicester presented Baljit Singh Brar with trophy on behalf of Leicester City Council.

\thereafter Oadby Councillor Santokh Singh Athwal presented Baljit Singh with a gift of electronic Note book on behalf of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council. The President of the football club Jasvir Singh Johal presented a trophy to Baljit Singh. Eventually prominent members of the Leicester Sikh community Giani Sewa Singh and Mukhtiar Singh Khela, Jasvir Singh Johal presented Brar Sahib with a trophy.

Baljit Singh Brar, very knowledgeable who posses four degrees was Editor of Panthic newspaper Ajj Di Awaaj and launched Daily Punjab Times in 2012.. After the presentations Baljit Singh held a Questions and Answers session about the current needs of NRIs which was well received.
GNG football Tournament 2026

Baljit Singh Ji was very impressed that each member present was asked for their opinion about improving the coming football tournament in July. Tarlochan Singh Virk of Punjabi Listeners Club suggested that scouts of professional clubs should be invited so that our young players can be spotted early. Davinder Singh Dhesi said student sof all Leicester Punjabi Schools should be invited to play “taster” matches. Everyone enjoyed the light refreshments.

GNG FC was founded in 1969 by group of friends playing football in Spinney Hill Parl and is now one of the well-established clubs in England who has 11 children teams and 4 adult teams, won most of the Khalsa football Federation national summer tournaments last year. GNG Oadby Town is proud to be a Mental Health Friendly Club who are launching mental health Football Sessions, free 5 by 5 football for men over 18 years of age.

Baljit Singh Brar thanked The Lord Mayor of Leicester, GNG FC, Oadby and Wigston Borough Council and the Sikh community of Leicestershire for their kind words and presentations which he will treasure for a very long time.
