Recent changes to UK border rules mean that some people who hold dual nationality may face difficulties when travelling back to the United Kingdom if they use only a foreign passport.
(Asian independent) From 25 February 2026, British citizens who also hold another nationality can no longer enter the UK using only their foreign passport. They must travel with a valid British passport or have a Certificate of Entitlement confirming their right to live in the UK. A recent case reported in the media highlighted the difficulties this can cause. A young woman who holds both British and Spanish nationality was unable to board a flight back to the UK because she attempted to travel using only her Spanish passport. She is currently staying with family abroad while she resolves her documentation. This situation highlights an important issue for many people living in the UK, including families originally from India who first settled in European countries and later moved to Britain. Thousands of such families may hold dual nationality and may still be travelling using their European passports. Sital Singh Gill, Immigration Lawyer and General Secretary of the Indian Workers Association (Great Britain), has urged people to check their documents before travelling. Mr Gill said: “Many people may not yet be aware of these changes. Anyone who holds British citizenship, even if they also hold a European passport, should make sure they travel to the UK using a valid British passport or the appropriate documentation.” He added: “I would strongly advise members of the public to check their immigration status and travel documents before leaving the UK. If there is any doubt about citizenship or travel documents, it is best to seek professional immigration advice before travelling.” Mr Gill said raising awareness of the new rules is important to prevent people from facing unnecessary difficulties when returning to the UK. “Simple awareness and proper preparation can help people avoid stressful situations when travelling.”
