(Asian independent) The All India Peoples Front (AIPF) expresses its solidarity with the protests taking place across the world against the arrest of the President of Venezuela and his wife by US commandos late at night from their residence, and against the attack and occupation of Venezuela by the Trump administration.
The National Executive Committee of the AIPF has strongly condemned this attack on Venezuela’s sovereignty. In a resolution adopted by the Committee, it stated that an attack on an independent country, the overthrow of its elected government, and attempts to seize control over its natural resources constitute a blatant violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, and democratic values. In the case of the attack on Venezuela, it is also a fact that the Trump administration openly violated the constitutional provisions of the United States itself. Far from seeking approval from the US Congress, Trump did not even inform Congress about the attack. In a desperate and unconventional move to maintain the dominance of the petrodollar worldwide, the Trump administration carried out this action. However, such actions can no longer sustain the supremacy of the petrodollar for the United States. Instead, they will only generate unrest and instability across the world.
The AIPF resolution further stated that Venezuela’s only “crime” was its attempt to assert the rights of its people over its natural resources and to free its oil sector from the control of American companies. Venezuela also challenged the monopoly of the US dollar in the international market. The claim made by the United States that President Maduro was involved in drug trafficking and was suppressing the democratic activities of opposition forces, and that this justified the attack on Venezuela, is sheer hypocrisy. The United States supports dictatorial regimes across the world and has long been directly and indirectly seizing control over the resources of countries in the Global South.
The AIPF demands that the NDA-led central government of India formally register its protest against the Trump administration’s occupation of Venezuela, as this attack constitutes an assault on the right to self-determination of all countries in the Global South. Similar attacks have been carried out by the United States in the past in countries such as Iraq and Libya under various pretexts.
On behalf of the National Executive Committee,
S. R. Darapuri
National President All India Peoples Front
