The Punjabi Listeners Club formed on the 3rd anniversary of BBC Radio Leicester’s Punjabi Programme On 9th September 1995 organized Punjabi Writing & Speaking Competition for 200 Students at Govt. Primary Smart School, Village Virk, Distt. Jalandhar with the full support of Gram Panchayat Pind Virk & all staff of the School on Tuesday 15th April in celebration of Khalsa Sana Diwas & as part of the club’s 30th Anniversary.
The event was well attended, successful, very memorable & raised 50000 rupees for the improvement of the school & 12000 Rupees given to students who came 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the Four sections of the competition & those who got top marks in each class in the end of the year March Exams.
The 200 peoples divided in 4 sections depended on age group i.e Colouring Competition, Neat Writing Competition, Writing Competition & Poetry Competition. The independent marking was done by Punjabi Language Head Teacher Kulwinder Kaur Kahlon of Govt. Secondary Smart School, Virk, Distt. Jalandhar which is next to Primary School.
Sumeet Basra, Sarpanch of Vill. Virk thanked all the five people who donated 10000 Rupees each for the windows as well as very special thanks to Tarlochan Singh Virk for organizing this event.
The head teacher of the Primary School Paramjit Kaur pointed out that it is imperative to learn Maa Boli Punjabi which is made difficult by parents watching Hindi Serials & speaking too much hindi at home.
Tarlochan Singh Virk Co-ordinator of Punjabi Listeners Club was highly impressed by the standard of the Students performances & said that as long I am alive, similar events will be held every year.
The winning students were presented with a trophy & cash prizes. Punjabi Listeners Club presented A3 size framed photo of Nawab Kapoor Singh Virk & a special trophy to Head Teacher of the School, Sarpanch of Village Virk & Chief Guest of the event Prof. Sandhu Biryami.
