The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has criticised the government for spending a large amount of public money on maintaining the official homes of Union ministers in Lutyens’ Delhi.
According to reports, ₹92.35 crore was spent on repairing, renovating and furnishing these residences during 2025–26. The total expenditure over the past 12 years was reported to be ₹547.68 crore.
CJP has described these homes as lavish and questioned whether such high spending is necessary. It has urged the government to stop spending so much on ministers’ residences and to focus instead on improving government schools. The party argues that public money should be used for the welfare of ordinary citizens rather than for making already comfortable homes even more expensive.
Government schools in many parts of India urgently need better funding. Some schools lack safe buildings, clean toilets, proper classrooms, libraries, laboratories and computers. Many students also do not have access to sufficient learning materials. Spending money on these facilities could improve the quality of education and provide children with a better future.
The money spent on ministers’ homes could therefore be used for important educational projects. It could help repair old school buildings, provide desks and books, improve sanitation and support teachers and students. Even if the entire amount could not be transferred directly to schools, reducing unnecessary expenditure would make more money available for public services.
At the same time, some repairs to official residences may be necessary because many government buildings are old and require regular maintenance. However, the government should ensure that such work is reasonable, transparent and not wasteful. Ministers should set an example by supporting responsible use of public money.
In conclusion, CJP’s criticism raises an important question about government priorities. Public funds should be spent carefully and fairly. While essential maintenance cannot be avoided, education should receive greater attention because strong government schools are essential for the country’s progress.
