(Asian Independent)- Ambedkar Association of North America (AANA) celebrated the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Canton Township, Michigan on April 13, 2024. This celebration was a historic collaboration between the City of Canton and Ambedkar Association of North America (AANA). State Representative Ranjeev Puri graced this event along with Canton Township Trustee Ms. Tania Ganguly, Chair and Partnership for the Arts, Representative Kevin Ryan.
For this historic event, more than 250+ attendees traveled from as far as Florida, Arizona, Virginia, Colorado, Seattle, Georgia, and from nearby states of Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio.
Our new generation hosts, Madhu and Arsh, introduced the program agenda and guest speakers. The celebration began with a splendid and melodious performance of the welcome song, “Bhim Stuti.” AANA president Smitha delivered an insightful address and Vivek warmly welcoming honorable guests and members who traveled long distance.
Prof. Keune, a faculty member of the Religious Studies Department at Michigan State University and an expert in Buddhist studies, spoke about Transnational Buddhism and Ambedkarite Migration. Prof. Mahalingam, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan, presented his thesis on “Ambedkar, Mindfulness, and Compassion: A Social Justice Perspective.” An enlightening panel discussion and Q&A session followed their talks.
An excellent cultural performance followed lunch, starting with our young, dynamic, and talented next generation. Arohi’s outstanding dance performance brought joy and inspiration to everyone in the audience. Ian, Inesh, and Arin delivered engaging speeches, showcasing their enthusiasm, creativity, and hard work. Few participants submitted essays, demonstrating their dedication ,talent and writing skill. AANA continues to support and encourage children in their creative endeavors, nurturing their growth into confident, compassionate individuals who will make a positive difference in society.
Mayuri, Roshani S, Rajiv, and Inesh skillfully hosted the cultural program. Bhim Kanya Supriya, Neha, Trupti, Priya, Roshani D, and Punjabi dance performers Roshani S, Mayuri, and Kiran captivated the audience with their cultural dances. Another mesmerizing performance, “Shur Bhimache Shur Shipai,” featured Akshay, Pankaj, Mahesh, Ratan, Sandeep, and Rajiv. These heartfelt tributes to Dr. Ambedkar brought the spirit of the Ambedkarite movement to life. For the first time in history, Archana & Group presented a live musical tribute through “Bhim Powada”.
Poets and performers, such as Sunita Ji, left a lasting impression on the audience with their moving renditions. Maulik Raj & Prerna’s mesmerizing musical play showcased the actors’ exceptional talent and dedication.
AANA is grateful to the talented photographers Sujata, Aditi, and Santosh, who voluntarily captured the event’s memories, and deeply appreciates their patience and kindness. The dedicated decoration team, led by Priya and team transformed the venue into a captivating and festive space. This event won’t be possible without City of Canton and continual follow up and longtime support from Vivek C .
AANA extends its gratitude to Sandhya ji for sponsoring the breakfast, lunch, and snacks for the Jayanti program. The organization also thanks all volunteers, organizers, and support staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth planning and execution of this memorable and impactful event.
As we conclude this momentous celebration, let us carry forward the teachings and ideals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, striving to create a society based on justice, equality, and fraternity.
