1 dead, over 30 hurt in Japan train-truck collision

One man has been confirmed dead and dozens of people were injured after a train collided with a truck in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, on Thursday, causing sections of the train to derail.

Tokyo,  At least one person died and more than 30 were injured on Thursday when a train collided with a truck near the Japanese city of Yokohama.

Televised images showed the first wagon of the train completely tilted to its right and off its tracks, while the remains of a truck – apparently transporting fruit – could be seen near it, with its cargo scattered around, state broadcaster NHK reported.

Several coaches of the train were derailed in the accident, according to Keikyu, the company that operates the line.

The eight-coach suburban train was travelling from Tokyo’s Aoto district to Misakiguchi in Kanagawa prefecture. The truck caught fire after the collision at a level crossing.

While the identity of the person who died was yet to be revealed, it is believed that he might be the 67-year-old driver of the truck who succumbed to his injuries.

The driver had sustained the most serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital after being rescued by emergency teams.
