THE ASIAN INDEPENDENT, UK-
Meeran Haider, a student activist from Jamia Millia University, has been in jail for 1,644 days. His only “crime” was his protest against the CAA, a law introduced by the BJP Government that denies citizenship to a specific section of people based on religion.
Intellectuals, civil society members, legal experts, and judges have called the CAA a violation of the Constitutional principle of secularism.
However, the adamant Modi Government, instead of correcting its flawed policies, continued to imprison activists and student leaders.
The primary targets of this communal government were minority Muslims, particularly bright youth. The arrest of Meeran Haider and the denial of justice to him and other imprisoned activists should be viewed within this context.
I strongly feel that we have failed to support the leaders who fought on the front lines due to our selfish attitudes and inaction.
It is high time we raised our voices in peaceful and democratic ways to demand the immediate release of Meeran and other political prisoners.
