Labour MPs are growing unhappy with Keir Starmer’s leadership, and many are quietly asking Andy Burnham to step in as a replacement. This isn’t just gossip – Burnham himself has admitted that MPs have been contacting him all summer asking him to challenge Starmer for the party leadership.
Keir Starmer is facing serious troubles just months into his time as Prime Minister. Labour MPs are “almost universally pissed off” with how things are going. The mood among his own MPs has changed from being excited and hopeful to feeling “very subdued” and disappointed.
Sir Keir Starmer is probably worst Prime Minister Britain ever had. He won the general election as there was widespread disillusionment with the Conservative Party. People voted for a change. A change for better. It seems 14 years in opposition, Labour Party has learnt nothing. It has become so unpopular that even it’s own MPs are plotting to have Starmer ousted. He is a lame duck Prime Minister.
Several big issues are causing this unhappiness:
1. Unpopular Policies
The decision to cut winter fuel payments for pensioners has been particularly damaging. MPs call it Labour’s “original sin” and say no government policy is more hated by voters. On the doorstep during local elections, this policy kept coming up as something voters couldn’t forgive.
2. Confusing Direction
Many Labour MPs are asking Starmer a simple question: “What do you stand for?” They feel the party has lost its way and doesn’t have a clear message about what it wants to achieve.
3. Electoral Disasters
Labour has been losing badly in recent elections. They lost a seat that should have been safe and performed worse than they did even in their terrible 2021 results. Reform UK is taking votes away from Labour, especially in working-class areas that used to be Labour strongholds.
4. Immigration Controversy
Starmer’s recent tough talk on immigration, including his “island of strangers” speech, has upset many Labour MPs who think this goes against the party’s values.
Why MPs Want Burnham
Andy Burnham offers something different that appeals to frustrated Labour MPs:
1. Popular with Voters
Opinion polls show Burnham is much more popular with the public than Starmer. In one recent poll, Burnham scored +12% while Starmer was down at -20%. When people were asked who would make the best Labour leader, Burnham beat Starmer by 9 points.
2. Clear Values
Unlike Starmer, Burnham has clear left-wing policies that sound more like traditional Labour. He wants to build more council houses, cut taxes for low earners, and put higher taxes on the wealthy. This gives Labour MPs something concrete to believe in.
3. Northern Appeal
Burnham is Mayor of Greater Manchester and understands northern, working-class voters – exactly the people Labour is losing to Reform UK. He speaks their language and knows their concerns.
4. Proven Winner
As Manchester Mayor, Burnham has shown he can win elections and deliver for ordinary people. This gives MPs confidence he could do better than Starmer.
The Challenge Ahead
However, Burnham faces big obstacles if he wants to replace Starmer. He would have to give up being Manchester Mayor, win a seat in Parliament, and get 80 Labour MPs to support him. Some Manchester MPs who could have stepped aside to create a seat for him have decided to stay put.
There’s also the risk that Reform UK is now so strong in northern seats that even Burnham might struggle to win.
Conclusion
Labour MPs want Andy Burnham to replace Keir Starmer because they’ve lost faith in their current leader. Starmer’s unpopular policies, poor election results, and unclear message have left his own MPs feeling frustrated and directionless.
Burnham represents a return to traditional Labour values, offers clearer leadership, and polls much better with voters. While the practical challenges of replacing Starmer are significant, the growing calls from MPs show just how unhappy they are with the current direction of their party.
The question now is whether Burnham will take the risk of giving up his successful role as Manchester Mayor to try to save the Labour Party from what many MPs see as a failed leadership.
