THE ASIAN INDEPENDENT UK-
In loving memory of Mata Gujar Kaur Ji, mother of tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh, and Sahibzaday {four sons of the tenth Guru} a Turban Tying Competition is being organised by Gurdwara Guru HarKrishan Sahib Ji and Punjabi Listeners Club on Thursday 26 December 2024 from 12.00 -4.00 pm at 48 Kenilworth Drive, Oadby, Leicestershire LE2 5LG.
The competition is open to girls and boys and divided into these groups …Up to 7 years, 8-14 years and 15 to 20 years. Those judged to be Winner, Runner Up and 3rd Place in each group for boys and girl’s sections will be awarded trophies. Everyone taking part will be given a medallion.
Competition is free to enter and those participating should bring their own mirrors and turbans. Turbans are to be tied in the Gurdwara Sahib and proof of age to be provided before taking part. Judge’s decision will be final.
Turban is one of the most distinguishing symbols of Sikhism and the Sikhs have had to fight major court cases to be allowed to wear the Turban at place of work and wear it instead of the helmet. As well as keeping you warm in cold weather, it is also beneficial when the temperature is high. After registration, a talk will be given on the importance of the turban, then the competition will begin with the Up to 7 years group tying their turbans.
Sukhdev Sigh Atwal Sokha Udopuria of Kabin King and DEV3K Appreciation Society from Derbyshire is proud to contribute towards the cost of trophies for the 15-20 age group. Santokh Singh Bath of Knighton Self Service Welford Road, Leicester is contributing towards the cost of trophies for the 8-14 years group. Gurnam Singh Rupowal ex-General Secretary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara Sahib is contributing towards cost of trophies for the Up to 7 Years age group.
The President of the Gurdwara Harjinder Singh Rai pointed out that “the Turban Tying Competition is open to everyone and that includes girls and boys from not just Sikh community but also Hindus, Muslims Christians and all religions”. We held a Turban Tying Day on Boxing day last year which was a great success and shown on Sky channel 760.
Interest shown in this year’s competition has already exceeded our expectations. Young people are coming to the Gurdwara to practice their Turban Tying skills. Special Awards will be given to those not taking part in the competition who are of younger age but have had their turbans tied to good standard by parents or relatives.”
The main organiser and Co-Ordinator of Punjabi Listeners Club Tarlochan Singh Virk said we are grateful to almighty God that a Turban Tying Competition is taking place as part of the Punjabi Listeners Club’s 30th Anniversary Celebrations at which the Guest of Honour is Professor Robert Allison CBE DL.
Guru Ka Langar {Free Vegetarian Food} will be provided.
