THE PARTITION OF INDIA AND THE SIKHS – LECTURE IN LEICESTER
(THE ASIAN INDEPENDENT)- The Partition of India and The Sikhs lecture is being held at Wigston Library, Bull Head Street, Wigston, Leicestershire, LE18 1PA on Saturday 4th May 2024 from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm. It is going to be presented by Professor Gurharpal Singh BSc MA PhD who holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at SOAS, University of London.
A budding poet Indy will sing her poem about the partition which she wrote during the Covid pandemic years. Questions and Answers session will take place immediately after the lecture to which special guests such as Leader of Oadby and Wigston Samia Haq, Mayor of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, President of Oadby Gurdwara Sahib, Head of Leicestershire Libraries, Councillors from Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council and prominent members of the local Sikh and Punjabi communities are likely to be attending.
Dr, Rajindra Prasad said neither Congress Party, nor the Hindus or Sikhs ever wanted the division of India. It was the Muslim League and Mr. Jinnah who had been insisting on it. A British lawyer Sir Cyril Radcliffe was commissioned to draw the line of borders that would divide British – ruled India into two new , independent nations: Hindu majority India and the mainly Muslim majority Pakistan. The vast majority of the people who gave their lives for the two new independent were from the Sikh community.
The organisers of the event Gurdwara Shri Guru HarKrishan Sahib and Punjabi Listeners Club will be making a presentation to the Lecturer.
