Angela Rayner, Deputy Prime Minister and nicknamed the “Red Queen” by critics, has built her political career on attacking Conservative politicians for tax avoidance and corruption.
Pregnant at 16, a grandmother by the age of 37, divorced in 2023 with an on-off boyfriend. Red Queen’s property affairs have rarely seen straightforward.
However, her recent admission of underpaying £40,000 in stamp duty reveals a troubling pattern of hypocrisy that exposes her duplicitous nature.

The Attack Dog in Opposition

Throughout her time in opposition, Rayner positioned herself as a fierce critic of Conservative tax arrangements. She repeatedly demanded resignations when Conservative ministers faced similar financial controversies, often using harsh language about “fraud” and “corruption.” Her aggressive style made her popular with Labour supporters who saw her as someone willing to hold the powerful to account.

Rayner built her reputation on the principle that politicians must be held to the highest standards. She showed no mercy when Conservatives faced tax questions, arguing that any financial irregularities were unacceptable for public servants. This tough stance helped establish her as a key Labour figure.

The Revelation

In 2025, media investigations revealed that Rayner had saved £40,000 in stamp duty when purchasing an £800,000 flat in Hove. The arrangement involved removing her name from her previous property and placing it in a trust for her disabled son. While the trust arrangement may have been legitimate, it created a tax advantage that she failed to declare properly.

Crucially, Rayner did not voluntarily admit this error. She only confessed after being exposed by journalists and facing mounting pressure. Her initial response was to be evasive and defensive, exactly the behaviour she had criticized in Conservative politicians.

The Double Standard

The contrast between Rayner’s treatment of Conservative tax issues and her own conduct is stark. When in opposition, she demanded immediate resignations and showed no sympathy for complex personal circumstances. However, when facing her own tax problems, she suddenly emphasized the “complexities of family life” and her son’s disability as mitigating factors.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch highlighted this hypocrisy perfectly, noting that “I’m not sure we would have heard all that sympathy if it was a Conservative deputy prime minister who had underpaid her tax.” This observation cuts to the heart of Rayner’s duplicitous approach.

The Defence Falls Apart

Rayner’s defence relies on claiming she received poor legal advice and acted in good faith. However, this argument is undermined by several factors. First, she only admitted the error after being caught, not through voluntary disclosure. Second, as a senior politician who regularly attacks others over tax matters, she should have been extra careful about her own arrangements.

Most damaging of all, her claims of being “in shock” and “devastated” appear calculated rather than genuine. If she truly believed in the standards she applied to others, she would have resigned immediately upon discovering her error.

Conclusion

Angela Rayner’s tax controversy reveals the duplicitous nature that critics have long suspected. She built her career attacking Conservative politicians for the very behaviour she herself engaged in. When caught, she applied completely different standards to herself, using her son’s disability as both explanation and shield from criticism.

This hypocrisy damages not just Rayner personally, but undermines public trust in politicians generally. Her refusal to resign, despite demanding resignations from others in similar circumstances, proves that her previous moral outrage was merely political theatre rather than genuine principle.

The “Red Queen” has been exposed as someone who believes in one rule for her opponents and another for herself. This duplicitous approach makes her unfit to serve as Deputy Prime Minister.
