Severe Floods hit Bedfordshire communities

Bedford (Asian Independent)- Bedford & surrounding villages suffered worse flooding with over 1300 people had to vacate homes on the Christmas night.

Bedford stadium was turned into an emergency support centre and many village communities halls were turned into rescue support centre in a coordinated operation jointly led by the emergency services and Bedford Borough Council.

Khalsa Aid volunteers reached Bedford to help emergency services and delivered 1000 sand bags. SEVA Trust UK arranged food deliveries for families in need and for people in rescue centres.
Sri Guru Ravidass Sabah, Bedford offered hot meals and free shelter in their community hall for the needy families.

Chairman of SEVA Trust Charan Sekhon said ‘We have been delivering food parcels since March in Bedford to the elderly, vulnerable people, students & families facing hardships due to Covid19 tough times for all and we never anticipated that the floods can hit Bedford so hard. We are overwhelmed by support offers by our volunteers who were all on holidays after we decided to take one week’s Christmas break following very tough long year delivering food parcels. During Christmas time so many families are facing tough times and it is our duty to support our local communities in any way we can.‘’

Thanking all the volunteers & charity support efforts, the Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson said “A huge thank you must go to all the organisations, groups and volunteers who have been part of the response to this flood. From Council officers, emergency services, local flood groups, the very many volunteer groups who supported the effort and the numerous offers of support we received from the public, thank you to you all’’.

“It really does speak to Bedford Borough’s incredible community spirit.”said the Mayor.
