Sentence increased for Leicester gang member

A man involved in a number of violent incidents has had his sentence increased today after the Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, referred it to the Court of Appeal.

In 2015, a gang comprising of Liban Yaryare, now 22, and a number of others were involved in violent confrontations with a rival gang around Leicester. On one of these occasions Yaryare, armed with a knife, and other gang members chased their victim into a park where he was stabbed 11 times and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Yaryare was originally sentenced at Leicester Crown Court in October 2018, where Yaryare was given 14 and a half years in prison. Today, the Court of Appeal has increased Yaryare’s sentence to 18 and a half years in prison.

Speaking after the hearing, the Solicitor General said:

Gang-related crimes are serious offences, especially when weapons are involved. Longer sentences more accurately reflect the serious injuries that Yaryare inflicted on his victim, and the damage his actions had on the wider community.
