At the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, India took a very strong and clear stand against terrorism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about how terrorism hurts everyone and said there should be no “double standards” when dealing with this threat. He especially mentioned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, showing India’s pain and determination to fight terrorism.

India pressed other SCO members to openly and clearly condemn all kinds of terrorism, including terrorism that crosses borders.

The summit also brought embarrassment for Pakistan. India directly connected terrorism to groups supported by Pakistan and called out countries that use terrorism as a political tool. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was sidelined by world leaders during the summit, and Pakistan was seen as isolated because many countries, including China, recognized India’s concerns about terrorism. This was a public humiliation that weakened Pakistan’s standing internationally.

Prime Minister Modi also sent a clear message to the United States. He criticized “double standards” in fighting terrorism—meaning that some countries condemn terrorism only when it suits them, but support others when convenient. This was seen as a sharp criticism of the US, especially because the US recently supported Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir, which India views as supporting terrorism.

India’s strong message at the SCO summit showed its leadership in fighting terrorism. India refused to accept any soft talk or double standards. The summit exposed Pakistan’s support for terrorism and warned the US and others to be consistent and serious in fighting terrorism. This clear stand strengthens India’s position in the world while demanding a united fight against terrorism for the safety and progress of all nations.
This is big diplomatic win for India. But India needs to see implementation of this strong condemnation of terrorism in form a policy.
