Guwahati: A passenger being screened for COVID-19 on her arrival at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati after India resumed civil passenger flight services on Monday, exactly two-months after it had suspended these operations due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Guwahati/Agartala, (Asian independent) Over 98 per cent of the 2,518 Covid-19 positive cases of eight northeastern states are asymptomatic, health officials said on Wednesday.

Health officials and medical experts of northeastern states said that these people are just carriers of the virus.

“Though minor children and aged people are infected, a majority of the Covid-19 positive cases belong to 35-55 years age group,” a senior health official of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) said.

Another senior health official said in Agartala that among the 26 family members of the Border Security Force (BSF), two women — mothers of two BSF jawans — aged 82 and 61 years old, though infected, were asymptomatic and in a very short period, recovered from the disease and were discharged from hospitals.

With the return of 3.5 lakh domestic inhabitants from south and north India, there is a surge in coronavirus cases in the eight northeastern states, taking the total to 2,518, out of which 1,868 are active cases, as on Wednesday night.

According to Assam health officials, with 195 fresh Covid-19 positive cases, the state has so far 1,756 corona patients, including 1,336 active cases.

The first confirmed case was reported in the state on March 31. Four Covid-19 patients, including a 16-year-old girl, have died so far.

The officials said that two of Assam’s 33 districts — Kamrup Metro (382) and Golaghat (189) — account for 571 coronavirus patients. While Assam’s main city and commercial hub Guwahati fall in Kamrup Metro, Golaghat district is a major tea growing area and a part of the famous Kaziranga National Park in the district.

In Tripura, Wednesday’s 49 new cases took the state’s total to 520, including 163 Border Security Force troopers, officers and their kin. However, the state’s active cases are 344 whereas three patients have migrated to other states.

After Assam and Tripura, 108 (70 active) cases have so far been found in Manipur, followed by 58 (all active) in Nagaland, 31 (17 active) in Meghalaya, 29 (28 active) in Arunachal Pradesh, 14 (13 active) in Mizoram and two (both active) in Sikkim.
