Jihad Al-Shamie was a British citizen of Syrian descent who carried out a deadly terrorist attack at a synagogue in Manchester in October 2025.
He was 35 years old and had moved to the UK as a child, later becoming a British citizen at age 16. Al-Shamie was known locally as a quiet man who enjoyed weightlifting, but he rarely spoke to neighbours and kept mostly to himself.

At the time of the attack, Al-Shamie was on bail after having been arrested on suspicion of rape earlier that year. He had not been charged, but the incident was still under investigation by police.

On the day of the attack, Al-Shamie approached the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. Security staff confronted him as he loitered suspiciously, but he left, only to return in a car fifteen minutes later and quickly launch a violent assault. During the attack, he drove his car into people gathered outside and then stabbed others, killing two men, Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby, and injuring three more. Police responded rapidly and shot Al-Shamie dead at the scene in order to prevent further harm. Investigators later discovered that he wore what appeared to be an explosive device, but it turned out to be a fake.

Authorities believe Al-Shamie may have been influenced by extreme Islamist beliefs, though he was not previously known to counterterrorism policing. His actions shocked the local community, which had already felt unsafe due to rising antisemitism.
Details about his family also emerged. His father, Faraj Al-Shamie, a surgeon, posted on Facebook praising Hamas attacks against Israel, although after the Manchester attack, the family condemned Jihad’s actions and expressed deep sorrow for the victims.

2012 Threatening Letter to MP

Counterterrorism police are also investigating whether Al-Shamie was the same person who sent a threatening letter or emails to Conservative MP John Howell in 2012. The correspondence told Howell, “It is people like you who deserve to die,” referencing Israel policy. As of now, it is not yet confirmed that it was the same Jihad Al-Shamie involved in both cases, but the similarity in the name has led authorities to probe the possible link.

Jihad Al-Shamie was a troubled individual who committed a tragic act of violence in Manchester while facing serious criminal allegations, and whose background and family drew further attention to extremist influences and community tensions.
