Kiev, (Asian independent) Russian missiles have hit a restaurant and shopping area in eastern Ukraine’s Kramatorsk city, killing at least four people, including a 17-year-old girl, and injuring many more, Ukrainian officials say.

The strike on Tuesday evening came at a time when there was a large crowd of people inside the restaurant, The New York Times reported, citing the remarks made on national television by Regional Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko.

People may be trapped under the rubble and a rescue operation is underway, the BBC reported.

An eyewitness told the BBC that he saw “dead people, people screaming, people crying, huge chaos”.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s office said that a 17-year-old girl was among the dead and at least 42 people were wounded. The prosecutor general has also warned that it was possible that more people were trapped under the rubble.

“This is the city centre. These were public eating places crowded with civilians,” Kyrylenko told Ukrainian television.
The White House condemned Russia for its “brutal strikes” on Ukraine.
