Ekaterinburg (Russia), India were off to a great start in the ongoing World Men’s Boxing Championships as pugilist Brijesh Yadav (81kg) outclassed Poland’s Maleusz Goinski in an opening-round bout on Tuesday. Yadav defeated his opponent 5-0 in what turned out to be a one-sided affair.
Yadav has now advanced to the round of 32 where he will meet against Turkey’s Bayram Malkan on Sunday.
Three other Indian boxers — Amit Panghal (52kg), Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg) and Ashish Kumar (75kg) — have received first-round byes in their respective categories.
The tournament is being held in the revised eight weight categories (52kg, 57kg, 63kg, 69kg, 74kg, 81kg, 91kg, +91kg) format earmarked for Tokyo 2020, instead of the traditional 10 divisions.
