Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on his visit to Tamil Nadu observed first hand how a popular breakfast scheme which provides free and nutritious breakfast to primary school students (Classes 1 to 5) in government schools across the state. The scheme was launched on 15th September 2022. He is considering to implement the scheme in Punjab. This is a brilliant scheme that needs to be rolled out nationally.
Giving children a healthy breakfast at school is one of the best ways to help them grow, learn, and feel happy every day. When pupils receive a nutritious morning meal, it can bring many positive changes, especially for families who may struggle to provide balanced food at home.

Better Health and Fewer Sick Days

With a regular breakfast at school, children experience fewer health problems. In Tamil Nadu, hospital admissions among primary school students dropped by over 63%, and serious illnesses decreased by more than 70% after the breakfast scheme started. Many children in rural areas, whose parents leave for work early, benefit greatly because they no longer have to attend school on an empty stomach.

Improved Learning and Attendance

A healthy breakfast helps children pay more attention in class. In places using this scheme, the number of students who were able to concentrate without being reminded rose from around 86% to over 93%. Attendance rates also improved, reaching up to 95% in some schools, and more children come to school early, excited to learn and play with friends.

Stronger Skills and Happier pupils

When students eat breakfast together, their reading, speaking, and handwriting skills improve. Teachers have noticed better memory and understanding, fewer students feeling tired, and a brighter atmosphere during morning classes. Most importantly, children are happier, and parents feel grateful that their children are well-fed and ready to learn.

Conclusion

A free breakfast scheme at school ensures that every child, no matter their background, starts the day with energy and hope. It helps them stay healthy, learn better, and builds strong friendships. If more states follow this idea, like Punjab considering now, the future will be brighter for all children.
