Birmingham, (Asian Independent)- Shadow Mayor of the West Midlands Liam Byrne MP wants the Birmingham Commonwealth Games to showcase the region as the Green Workshop of the World.

Byrne shared his vision with Birmingham Council Leader Ian Ward as they toured the site of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Perry Barr today/yesterday.

“A billion and a half people will be tuning in to watch the Commonwealth Games corners of the earth. There will be seventy-two teams of athletes together with officials, spectators and their own media.

“They should see for themselves that these games will be the first zero carbon games in history.

“This will be a fantastic opportunity to show the world that the West Midlands is the hub of a new green industrial revolution that will transform every home, business and country in the world for the better.

Liam Byrne has written to the Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games asking them “to pull out every stop to deliver the first ever zero carbon games, built with the technology and ingenuity here on our doorstep in the West Midland,” Liam Byrne announced.

“From massive use of electric vehicles to planting thousands more trees, we’ve got the chance to send a message to the world, that this is a place, a region of industrial revolutionaries, determined to be the first net zero carbon in Britain.

“This week’s budget is a big chance to back our ambitions with huge investment in green infrastructure like the mission critical “gigafactory” in Coventry, which will transform our motor industry for the 21st century.

“Combined with the planned FestivalUK 2022 we could create a space to showcase our commitment to becoming the green workshop of the world, able to create investment, jobs and a future for our young people.
