(Asian independent) On August 1, 2024, a 13-year-old girl was approached on Whitechapel Road and taken to Weavers Fields park, where she was sexually assaulted. The assault was described by police as a traumatic ordeal. A member of the public found the victim after the attack and helped her.
Why Police Took Time to Name Suspects
Investigating cases with unknown attackers requires building a solid chain of evidence. In this case, the police spent significant time gathering and reviewing CCTV footage, collecting forensic evidence from the scene, and tracing potential witnesses across East London.
Public appeals were issued to identify men captured on camera. Detective Chief Inspector Anna Deighton noted that information provided by the public in response to earlier CCTV appeals was crucial in moving the investigation forward. This leads directly to identifying the two suspects: Showkoth Ahmed (31) and Jahidul Hassan Jaigirdar (34).
Issues of Evasion and Harbouring
The primary difficulty in capturing the suspects is their deliberate effort to evade arrest.
(1) International Flight
Police believe that Jahidul Hassan Jaigirdar may have left the UK and travelled to Bangladesh. When a suspect flees abroad, arrest requires international law enforcement cooperation and extradition procedures, which take time.
(2) Local Evasion
Police believe Showkoth Ahmed remains in the UK. When suspects hide locally, they often rely on informal networks, untracked locations, or deliberate non-cooperation from associates.
Harbouring a wanted suspect or assisting an offender to evade justice is a criminal offense under UK law. The independent charity Crimestoppers has offered a £10,000 reward for information that leads to their arrest and conviction.
Police and Crimestoppers continue to urge anyone with knowledge of their whereabouts to report it anonymously to help bring justice for the young victim.
