The Home Secretary Has Lost the Plot on Asylum

(Asian imndependent)   Shabana Mahmood’s job is to protect the public and keep faith with voters on border control. On both counts, she is failing. Start with the mismatch between her policy and the public. Ipsos found 67% of people see asylum numbers as excessive, the issue on which voters are most critical of the status quo.

The Home Secretary’s answer at Labour’s conference was to announce a new route prioritising Afghan women and girls and Palestinians, with a faster path to settlement than people arriving irregularly would get. Voters asked for a firmer grip. She offered a wider door and a better deal for those who use it. (ipsos)
The promise that numbers will be “very small and capped” deserves no trust. This is a system critics say has outgrown every limit placed on it, and family reunion can multiply arrivals once the first cohort is here. A Home Secretary who has presided over unresolved Channel crossings has not earned the benefit of the doubt on her own caps.
Then there is the retreat. Mahmood’s reforms to indefinite leave to remain were meant to be a statement of seriousness. Instead, she has signalled they will be softened, citing a balance of fairness. Critics read that as a minister bowing to her own backbenchers and the unions, putting party management ahead of the public she answers to.

Add charity-sponsored refugee schemes, which hand private groups a role in shaping who arrives, and the pattern is plain: control is being outsourced while responsibility is retained.
The security record is the sharpest charge. When a case emerges of a person with alleged links to a terrorist organisation being granted citizenship and then allegedly plotting an attack, it is the Home Secretary’s department that signed off on the system. She asks the public to accept more risk while the Home Office’s vetting failures keep surfacing.
The verdict from her critics is simple: a minister who ignores voters, dilutes her own reforms and expands routes while the border leaks should not be trusted to run asylum policy.
