Taxpayers are being robbed in broad daylight. Every time a newly paved highway strips apart after the first rain, a roof collapses at a brand-new airport, or a billion-dollar bridge washes into a river, it is not an engineering accident. It is grand theft of public money, executed by a corrupt cartel of contractors, bureaucrats, and politicians who treat the national treasury as their private bank account.
Modi Proposes a “fourth-party audit” in the face of this systemic looting is a pathetic joke. It is administrative theatre designed to give political leaders cover while the kickback machine keeps humming.
The Tender Kickback Machine
Public infrastructure in India has turned into a legalized laundering operation where safety and quality are systematically traded for political capital and private wealth:
(1) Pre-Bribed Contracts.
Tenders are not awarded to the most competent builder; they are awarded to whoever pays the highest cut. To protect their profit margins after paying off politicians and top officials, contractors deliberately use low-grade cement, fake stress-test data, and substandard steel.
(2) Political Protection at the Top.
When a structure fails, political leaders put on a performance of “pulling up secretaries” and demanding inquiries. This is a deliberate diversion. Low-level site engineers are suspended as sacrificial lambs so the police never follow the money trail up to the political bosses who took the cut.
(3) No Real Punishment
A contractor who steals hundreds of crores of taxpayer money and builds a death trap does not go to prison. At worst, their firm gets a temporary blacklisting, an administrative slap on the wrist. They simply form a new company, pay the next batch of bribes, and secure the next round of tenders.
Why “More Audits” is an Insult to Taxpayers
Calling for another audit layer when infrastructure collapses is a deliberate strategy to delay and whitewash criminal fraud:
(1) Paperwork Doesn’t Stop Theft.
An audit is a piece of paper; it has no teeth. Bureaucrats use multi-layered audits to kick the can down the road until the public forgets, the media moves on, and no one is held responsible.
(2) Creating New Bribe Gatekeepers.
Adding a “fourth-party audit” just adds another layer of inspectors who need to be bribed. It does not fix the corruption; it just expands the list of people getting a cut of the taxpayer’s money.
(3) Shielding the System.
If three layers of oversight already signed off on a defective bridge, the problem is not a lack of auditors, it is that the auditors are part of the racket. Adding a fourth audit is simply adding a fourth cover-up.
What Real Action Looks Like: Stop Auditing, Start Arresting
If the government actually cared about protecting public funds instead of protecting political financiers, it would stop issuing administrative warnings and start issuing arrest warrants:
(1) Criminal Prosecution & Prison Time.
Treat structural fraud as a non-bailable criminal offense. Draft charges of criminal breach of trust, grand “larceny, and culpable homicide against contractors, lead engineers, and the ministers” who signed off on the contracts.
(2) Full Asset Seizure.
Strip corrupt contractors and complicit officials of every asset they own. Seize their bank accounts, real estate, and personal wealth to pay back the taxpayers down to the last rupee.
(3) Permanent Corporate Execution.
Permanently ban failing contractors, liquidate their companies, and impose lifelong bans on corporate directors so they can never touch public money again under a different name.
(4) Open Public Bidding and Testing Records.
Force every single material test, payment milestone, and inspector’s signature into an uneditable, publicly accessible database. If a road fails, citizens should instantly know the exact name of the official who signed off on it.
Until contractors and politicians are dragged to court and jailed for looting public funds, “infrastructure development” will remain what it currently is: a massive, tax-funded transfer of wealth from hard-working citizens straight into the pockets of corrupt elites.
The British looted India, now contractors, politicians and bureaucrats have replaced them!
