On the death anniversary of Madam Bhikaji Cama, we remember a fearless revolutionary who carried the flame of India’s freedom struggle far beyond its borders. Operating from the nerve centers of anti-colonial resistance like India House in London, she dedicated her life, comfort, and personal wealth to challenging the might of the British Empire.
Her defining historical moment occurred on August 22, 1907, at the International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany. Standing before an assembly of delegates from across the globe, Madam Cama raised an early version of the Indian national flag—a brilliant tricolour representing unity, struggle, and hope. In declaring the flag to be born of the sacrifices of young Indian patriots, she appealed to the international community to support the fight for self-rule.
By hoisting the banner on foreign soil, she etched her name into history as a visionary leader who ensured the voice of an enslaved nation echoed internationally. Today, we honor her unbreakable spirit, profound courage, and enduring legacy as a pioneer of India’s independence.
