Indian Workers Association says education minister’s resignation is only the first step in a wider struggle for justice and reform
London, 25 July 2026: The Indian Workers Association (Great Britain) has confirmed that Sunday’s London Day of Action, called by the South Asia Solidarity Group with the support of other organisations, will go ahead despite the reported resignation of India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, following weeks of student-led protests.
The Association described the resignation as a major victory for students and young people who have organised nationwide demonstrations over examination paper leaks, corruption, unemployment and failures within India’s education system.
However, it warned that the departure of one minister would not resolve the wider concerns raised by the movement.
In a statement, the organisation said that the “charge sheet” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government remained extensive, citing alleged attacks on democratic rights, the use of force against peaceful protesters and a continuing lack of accountability over examination scandals.
The Association called for meaningful education reforms, protection for those who participated in demonstrations and an independent investigation into allegations of police violence.
Sital Singh Gill, General Secretary of the Indian Workers Association (Great Britain), said:
“The resignation of the Education Minister is a huge victory for the courage and resistance of India’s students. But this is only one step—the struggle for justice, accountability and democratic rights must continue.
“The students are not alone. We stand shoulder to shoulder with them, and our solidarity will continue until their legitimate demands are met.”
The London Day of Action will take place on Sunday, 26 July 2026, beginning with a protest and open mic at 3pm in Trafalgar Square. Demonstrators will then march towards the Indian High Commission.
The event, called by the South Asia Solidarity Group, is expected to bring together students, trade unionists, members of the Indian diaspora, human-rights campaigners and representatives of community organisations.
The organisation concluded its statement with the message: “The student protest continues. Our solidarity continues. The march continues.”
