India put on a dominant performance to beat arch-rivals Pakistan 7-1 in their FIH Pro League hockey match at the Lee Valley Centre.
While Pakistan started strong, India’s high-speed attack completely took over the game in the second half. However, the match was heavily overshadowed by a major diplomatic blunder before the game even started.

Pre-Match Controversy:The Flag Blunder

During the national anthems, the stadium’s big screens and the miniature flags held by the young mascots displayed an incorrect Pakistani flag. The flag completely omitted the vertical white stripe on the left side.
Because that specific stripe represents Pakistan’s religious minorities, its removal caused immediate outrage among fans and officials. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) lodged a formal protest, prompting an unreserved official apology from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for the “operational mistake.”

How the Match Unfolded

An Early Shock: India controlled the ball early on but missed three penalty corners. Pakistan took advantage of a quick counter-attack in the 13th minute. Their captain, Abu Bakar Mahmood, scored a powerful drag-flick to give Pakistan an unexpected 1-0 lead.

The Turning Point: The second quarter changed everything. Pakistan lost forward Ahmad Nadeem to a painful facial injury. India capitalized on the disruption. In the 20th minute, Sukhjeet Singh deflected in a pass to tie the game. Six minutes later, Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh blasted a drag-flick into the top corner, putting India ahead 2-1 before halftime.

The Third-Quarter Blitz: The floodgates opened wide after the break. India scored four goals in just 10 minutes to put the game completely out of reach:

34 minute: Hardik Singh scored a penalty stroke to make it 3-1.
35 minute: Jugraj Singh hit a brilliant reverse-shot to make it 4-1.
41 minute: Abhishek scored with a clinical running finish for 5-1.
44 minute: Raj Kumar Pal tapped in a rebound to push the lead to 6-1.

India refused to slow down in the final quarter. In the 54th minute, Dilpreet Singh controlled a bouncing cross and scored from close range, sealing the 7-1 victory.

Team Effort
India’s seven goals came from seven different players, showing the incredible depth of their attack.
With this win, India maintained their 10-year unbeaten streak against Pakistan, stretching back to 2016. The result leaves India safe in the Pro League standings, while Pakistan finishes at the bottom of the table, resulting in their relegation to the Nations Cup for next season.
