Leicester- The 1995 formed voluntary organisation Punjabi Listeners Club that have raised thousands of pounds for UK registered charities are proud to be a small part to start a lunch club for the elderly Punjabis of Oadby and Wigston on Monday 29th June 2026 at the Barnabas Centre, St. Paul’s Close, Oadby, Leicester, LE2 4LZ.
Activities of the Sangat Group will consist of seated exercises, gentle walks. After these healthy refreshments will be provided. One of the organisers Councillor Santokh Singh Athwal commented “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Virk Sahib Ji. You are doing fantastic efforts to keep our elderly happy and healthy. I pray to Maharaj Ji to bless you with best health and Chardi Kla”.
The get together of the Punjabi elderly every Monday from 11 am to 12.30 pm hopes to reduce isolation and improve general health. Form filling will be provided. From time to time ‘Specialist Health Professionals’ will give talks.
Sulakhan Singh Dard, Leicestershire Ambassador for British Heart Foundation BHF said “ The South Asian community has a greater proportion of coronary heart disease and Diabetes mainly due to lack of exercises and eating food with lots of oil, sugar and salt. I remember Mr. Virk’s father Jhalman Singh got rid of his Type 2 Diabetes with very strict diet, exercising for 30 minutes daily and medication”.
