Leicester- Kulwinder Singh Johal was born in Punjab – land of five rivers who has dedicated his life to public service, community leadership and widening access to grassroots sports across the city of Leicester.
He completed his schooling and higher education in Leicester and began his career at Russell Castings Ltd, a long-established Leicester foundry producing ductile iron castings. Kulwinder Singh worked there for 25 years until the foundry closed in 2016, an experience that shaped his resilience and long-standing commitment to trade union values.
Guided by Sikh religion and the principle of seva {selfless service}, he has volunteered for decades.
As General Secretary of Guru Nanak Gurdwara, he helped host Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth 2 during her Golden Jubilee Celebrations to the Gurdwara in 2002.
He is very passionate and has played a leading role in developing GNG football Club as one of the city’s largest and most inclusive community sports organisations.
Kulwinder Singh was first elected as a Labour Councillor for Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields in 2015 and has served the ward since that time.
As Lord Mayor, he will champion the work of the Midland Langar Seva Society who are dedicated to addressing food insecurity and homelessness, and Leicester Hospitals Charity, working with the teams who support early diagnosis of diabetes and kidney care.
He is committed to serving every resident of Leicester with openness, respect and humility.
As the city’s First Citizen, he will be supported by his wife, Manjit Kaur, serving as Lady Mayoress, and their daughter Gursimran Kaur acting as Consort. They also have a son Ashvir Singh.
Lady Mayoress Manjit Kaur Johal will support the Lord Mayor in representing the city at civic engagements and community events. Lord Mayor’s Consort Gursimran Kaur Hayer is a media graduate from De Montfort University is a keen football supporter and a former player within the Leicester City Centre of Excellence.
