Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor — formerly Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and younger brother of King Charles III — was arrested this morning on his 66th birthday on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Six unmarked police vehicles arrived at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk in the early hours. Searches are also being conducted at a Berkshire address, his former home of Royal Lodge, Windsor.
Thames Valley Police confirmed a man in his sixties was in custody. They declined to name him, as is standard under British law.

What is he accused of?

The arrest stems directly from the release of millions of Jeffrey Epstein documents by the US Department of Justice. Emails appear to show that while serving as UK Special Trade Representative between 2001 and 2011, Mountbatten-Windsor forwarded confidential government briefings to convicted sex offender Epstein — including sensitive material on investment opportunities and trade visits to Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Police are also separately assessing allegations that a woman was trafficked to the UK by Epstein to have a sexual encounter with him.
Misconduct in public office carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment under British law.

What does this mean for the Royal Family?

This is an unprecedented moment. No senior member of the modern Royal Family has ever been arrested. The institution has spent years attempting to distance itself from Andrew’s association with Epstein. King Charles stripped him of his royal titles and forced him out of Royal Lodge. Buckingham Palace stated last week it would “stand ready to support” police if approached.

The arrest deals a fresh blow to a monarchy already under sustained pressure.

Will it be easy to prove?

This is where it becomes legally complicated. Prosecution under the Official Secrets Act is notoriously difficult. The Crown would need to demonstrate not only that confidential material was shared, but that Mountbatten-Windsor knew it was protected, that Epstein was an unauthorised recipient, and that sharing it was a deliberate and corrupt misuse of his public position.

What happens next?

He remains in police custody. He may be questioned, bailed pending further investigation, or in due course charged. If charged, a trial could be months or years away. He continues to deny all wrongdoing.
