Britain stands at a crossroads. While Italy takes bold action under PM Giorgia Meloni to protect its national identity and security, the UK continues down a path of weakness and indecision. It’s time for Britain to show some backbone.

Meloni’s government has introduced legislation to ban the burqa and niqab in public spaces. The bill includes fines of up to 3,000 euros for violations. It requires religious organizations to disclose their funding sources. It strengthens penalties against forced marriages and virginity testing. This isn’t just talk. With Meloni’s large majority, this bill will pass.

Italy is not alone. France banned the burqa in 2011. Denmark, Belgium, and over other countries worldwide have followed. Even the European Court of Human Rights has upheld these bans. These nations understand what Britain refuses to see: that security and integration require clear boundaries.

Britain’s Pathetic Response

When asked in Parliament whether Britain would follow this European example, Prime Minister Keir Starmer refused. Labour MP Mike Tapp confirmed the government won’t pursue a ban, hiding behind claims of “religious freedom.” The official government position is clear: no restrictions, no action, no change.

This is cowardice dressed up as tolerance.

The Real Issues

Face coverings create obvious security problems. How can we identify people in banks, airports, or government buildings when their faces are hidden? How can communities integrate when some members hide behind cloth barriers?

The burqa is not just a piece of clothing. It separates rather than unites. It signals that some groups consider their customs more important than the shared public space we all must navigate together.

Meanwhile, the bill Meloni proposed also tackles funding transparency. Why should religious organizations that refuse formal agreements with the state operate in secret? What are they hiding? Italy demands answers. Britain asks no questions.

Britain’s refusal to act has consequences. While other European nations set standards and expectations, Britain sends a message of weakness. We tell extremists that Britain will accommodate anything. We tell our citizens that their concerns about security and integration don’t matter. We tell the world that Britain no longer stands for anything.

Reform UK has raised the issue in Parliament. The British people want action. The government gives them excuses.

What Must Be Done

Britain must follow Meloni’s example. Ban face coverings in public spaces, schools, and government buildings. Require transparency in religious funding. Strengthen laws against practices that harm women and girls. Make it clear that while Britain respects religious freedom, that freedom has limits where public safety and social cohesion are concerned.

This isn’t about targeting any particular group. It’s about setting basic standards that everyone must follow. If France can do it, if Italy can do it, if Denmark and Belgium can do it, then Britain can do it too.

Courage or Cowardice

The question is simple: does Britain have the courage to follow Meloni’s lead?
History will judge which path we chose. Right now, Italy is showing leadership while Britain shows weakness. Meloni acts while Starmer makes excuses. One country protects its values while the other abandons them.

Britain once led the world. Now we cannot even follow our neighbours. It’s time for that to change. It’s time to follow Giorgia Meloni’s example and put Britain first.
