The Indian Workers Association (Great Britain) condemns in the strongest possible terms the violence and hate witnessed during yesterday’s far-right demonstration in central London, led by Tommy Robinson under the banner of ‘Unite the Kingdom’. According to reports, bottles and other missiles were thrown at police, leaving 26 officers injured. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that 25 arrests were made for a range of serious offences.

Despite this violent attempt by extremists to spread racism, division and fear, thousands of people came together in solidarity at the counter-demonstration organised by Stand Up To Racism, supported by trade unions, community groups, and progressive organisations from across the country. The Indian Workers Association (Great Britain) proudly joined this counter-protest, with our members travelling from across Britain to stand shoulder to shoulder against racism, fascism, and bigotry.

Sital Singh Gill, General Secretary of the Indian Workers Association (G.B.), stated:

        Sital Singh Gill

“Racism and fascism have long operated in this country — this is not new to us. But history shows that we have always resisted and defeated it. Every single person should be proud that we stood up yesterday against the lunacy and barbarity of the far-right extremists. What happened should be a real wake-up call for everyone who believes in basic humanity.

We must now decide whether we are willing to live in a society where might is right, and where anyone who does not fit into the ‘Little Englander’ racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic, and anti-trade union narrative is targeted. The people must wake up.

We need unity to fight back against those political forces that preach hatred against immigrants and working people in Britain. We fought fascism in the past, we will fight it today, and we will win in the future.”

The Indian Workers Association (Great Britain) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to standing against racism, fascism, and all forms of discrimination. We call upon all progressive people, trade unions, and community organisations to continue to build unity and resistance in defence of equality, justice, and humanity.
