V P Singh was prime minister of India for 11 month in 1989-90. His journey as prime minister of India was tumultuous because he wanted to empower the most marginalised of the society which was resisted by the power elite.

V P Singh ensured that the backward communities get 27% quota in the central government services. He honoured Dr Ambedkar with Bharat Ratna along with Nelson Mandela. V P Singh also ensured the life size statue of Dr Ambedkar in the Parliament House which was denied to father of India’s constitution. He also ensured Buddhist Dalit get reservation in the jobs.

V P Singh was the man who halted Lal Krishna Adwani’s rath Yatra termed by many as riot Yatra but the cost was too high. He lost his own government but protected the constitution of India and its secular inclusive values.

That V P Singh, who was one of the most honest politicians of India, remained ignored and hated by the upper elites.

DMK government led by M K Stalin installed the life size statue in the Presidency college campus of Chennai opposite Marina Beach.

It is great to see one of the icon of social justice and secularism getting due recognition in the land of Social justice and Periyar.

Thank you M K Stalin for this great symbolic gesture. Let us see whether the social justice netas in the North India will ever respect and honour V P Singh in his own land ?
