In August 2025, a court in Vienna, Austria, made a decision that upset many people. The court decided that if two people agree, they can solve their money or property fights using rules from Sharia law (Islamic law). This only works if both people clearly say yes, and only about money or property, not about crimes or family issues.

Many Austrians protested because they do not want Sharia law used at all. They worry it might be used more and more, making a “second” law system in Austria. Some worry that some people like women, can be forced to accept decisions they do not like.

The court said this is allowed because Austrian law lets people choose other ways (like religious rules) to solve private fights if it does not break Austria’s main values and laws.

The government said they will make new laws to stop Sharia rules from being used even in these cases. Most people and politicians do not want any form of Sharia justice in Austria, even for private problems.

The court only allowed it if both people freely agree and only about money/property, not about crimes or family.

Many people in Austria are angry and protested.

The government wants to stop this from happening again.
