A service is being held to mark the ending of Second World War n Europe which ended on 8th May 1945. The special service at Leicester Cathedral will be attended by The Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire Mike Kapur OBE CSt.J, the Lord Mayor of Leicester Councillor Bhupen Dave, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council Councillor Joe Orson, the Mayor of Leicester Sir Peter Soulsby and other Civic dignitaries on Thursday 8th May 2025 starting at 5.30 pm.
Over 400 000 Sikhs served in the British armed Forces during the two World Wars. Approximately 83,005 Sikh Soldiers were killed during World War 1 and 2. Additionally 109,045 Sikh Soldiers were seriously wounded.
An event in Birmingham in May 2023 paid tribute to the 1.5 million Sikh volunteers in the Indian army who fought alongside the British military during the two world wars and honoured the 83,005 Sikh Soldiers who gave their lives during the conflicts.
Eight members of the 1995 formed Punjabi Listeners Club that promotes Punjabi Language and Sikh religion are also attending the service. The Co-Ordinator of Punjabi Listeners Club Tarlochan Singh Virk wishes to sincerely thank the Invitations Office of Leicestershire Lieutenancy Office for their kindness in giving us the opportunity to remember all those who died in the World Wars and were seriously wounded so that we can live in freedom.
