Turban tying day at Oadby Gurdwara helps to keep young Sikhs connected to their roots.
(Asian Independent)- The Turban tying day in loving memory of Sikh martyrs Mata Gujar Kaur and Four Sahibzaday at Gurdwara Sri Guru HarKrishan Sahib in Oadby on Tuesday 26 December was well attended and a great success in which Sikhs from all ages took part and learnt about their religion and connected young Sikhs with their rich history.
There was a lot of excitement among the boys and girls taking part in turban tying as well as the colouring competition. Turbans by tied by themselves the turbans were tied by elders. Everyone was treated to a Sikh religion film and a video message from first turban wearing Member of Parliament Tan Dhesi MP in which he conveyed the importance of wearing the Turban and congratulated the organisers for holding such an event.
Giani Gursewak Singh speaking from he stage gave an in depth speech in Punjabi about the Sikh turban and that exchanging a Turban with someone is sign of friendship and what Turban is called in various countries around the world. Everyone who too part was given a trophy or medallion and a Sikh Goody Bag.
Jagjeet Singh said “The Turban tying event was an absolute success. Its lovely to see our next generation learning about their rich Sikh history and identity. This event was timed to coincide and remember the sacrifices of our great Sikh martyrs who fought against Tyranny and stood for Truth and Justice. Events like these keep our children connected to their roots and identity. I would like to thank the organisers for hosting this much needed event.
Organiser of the event Tarlochan Singh Virk, Co-Ordinator of Punjabi Listeners Club thanked the parents , children, Gurdwara Management, and those who supported and hoped this can be organised a number of times every year.
