GURU NANAK GURPURB TO BE CELEBRATED  AT LEICESTERSHIRE’S  WIGSTON LIBRARY

(Asian Independent)- After the successful Khalsa Sajna Divas Vaisakhi celebrations at the Oadby Library in April, the 1995 formed voluntary organisation Punjabi Listeners Club is celebrating the Guru Nanak Gurpurb {Birthday}, of the founder of Sikh religion in 1469, at Wigston Library, Bull Head Street, Wigston Magna, Leicestershire LE18 1PA on Saturday 2nd December 2023 from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm when the Guest of Honour will be Col: Richard Hurwood DL Deputy Lieutenant

Other speakers at the event include Dr. Kevin Feltham, Chairman Leicestershire County Council, Manjula Sood MBE FRSA High Bailiff of Leicester City Assistant City Mayor, Dr. Sujjan Singh MBBS FFARCSI, Sulakhan Singh BEM British Heart Foundation Ambassador.  Kamajit Kalia organiser of the pilgrimage to the birthplace of Guru Nanak and other historical Gurdwaras in Pakistan in April and November will enlighten those gathered about the celebrations that will have taken place on the Guru Ji birthplace now known as Nankana Sahib on 27th November.

A very special guest at the celebrations from London is Darpana Rathore MA author of Footprints on Waters Free and lecturer in MA World Religions Specialising in Sikh Studies will be speaking on Guru Nanak’s song of freedom, which is profound, inclusive and illuminates the boundlessness of life.

Leicester Council of Faiths will also be speaking on Guru Nanak as well as the first Asian woman Lord Mayor of Leicester in 2008 Cllr. Manjula Sood MBE, FRSA High Bailiff of Leicester City Assistant City Mayor will speak on what Guru Nanak did for women.  The celebrations will also include contributions from Cllr: Samia Haq Leader of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman Pro Vice Chancellor Guru Kashi University, Library Competition and activities for young people.

Bhai Jasbir Singh Khalsa said “Greetings to everyone on the 554th Gurpurb of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj.  On this auspicious occasion, it is great to see not only the Sikh community but the wider community coming together to mark this auspicious occasion in Leicestershire’s Wigston Library.”

Giani Paramjit Singh Dumeli will be giving his speech in Punjabi on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak.  The programme will begin with Shabad Kirtan {Religious Hymns} by Singhni Mansukhpreet Kaur Khalsa from Derbyshire the donations of which will be given to a UK registered charity.

Organisers of the event President of Gurdwara Sri Guru HarKrishan Sahib Harjinder Singh Rai and Co-Ordinator of Punjabi Listeners Club Tarlochan Singh Virk pointed out that this educational venue was chosen so that our community makes better use of the library facilities and for the libraries of Leicestershire to provide better services for the Sikh community by working jointly together with Gurdwaras and other community groups.
