After 10 yrs of Barbaric Biswajit murder- life term convict arrested in B’desh

Dhaka, (Asian independent) An absconding convict, sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the barbaric daylight murder of tailor Biswajit Das during an opposition protest in Dhaka on December 9, 2012, was arrested from Bogra on Friday, police said.

Das was hacked to death near the Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka during a strike called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance. The murder had put the ruling Awami League in a tight spot as most of the accused belonged to the its student affiliate, Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Jagannath University chapter.

A speedy trial tribunal sentenced eight people to death and 13 to life in prison in 2013 over the killing. Those got the life term included Alauddin, who was absconding and sentenced in absentia.

The Supreme Court’s High Court division in August 2017 upheld the death sentence of Rafikul Islam Shakil and Rajan Talukdar, commuted the death sentence of four to life imprisonment and acquitted four others.

The HC on November 5, 2017 released full text of a verdict that upheld death for two and life in prison for the other accused.

Police told IANS that they got a tip off about the visit of Alauddin, a native of Panchagarh’s Atwari, to the Mokamtala Bandar area to visit his in-laws and he was nabbed.

Dipak Kumar Das, chief of Shibganj Police Station, said Alauddin, who had married, was constantly changing his location to evade police. They got jobs in Chattogram and began to stay there.

Shibaganj police were preparing to hand him to Atwari Police Station as an arrest warrant was issued against him at that station.
