On December 25, 1927, Babasaheb Ambedkar burned Manusmriti as a symbol of rejection of the religious basis of untouchability. The event was arranged during the Mahad Satyagraha. Mahad Satyagraha was a fight to assert the Dalits’ right to access public water, and to embrace humanity and dignity. For Babasaheb—a staunch advocate of women’s rights and emancipation—it was a political action to burn Manusmriti publicly as he believed that the book entailed the rules preaching inhumane treatment not only towards women but also Dalits, in private as well as public sphere.
On 25th December 2020 The Manusmriti Dahan Divas is celebrated at Dr Ambedkar Public Senior Secondary School, Phoolpur Dhanal, Jalandhar, Punjab, India by the Bodhisatav Ambedkar Education Society.
This historical event was witnessed by respectable gathering of the society members, school staff and invited guests. Among the special guests Mr Parshotam Lal Dadra Prop Dadra Travels Jalandhar, Mr Ram Lubhaya President Bodhisatav Edu Society, Ms Chanchal Principal Bodhisatav School, Mr Husan Lal Trustee, Dh Ch Wazar Dhawaj, Mr M R Sallan President Babasahib Education Society, Mr Charanjit Singh IRS Rtd., Dr Sandeep Mehmi Assistant Registrar PTU, Mr Jaswant Rai Trustee & Gen Secretory Education Society, Mr Anil Kumar DM National Insurance, Ms Raj Kumari Saroya Mahi Principal Rtd, Mr Dev Raj GM SBI Rtd, school staff and students were present.
A New Year Calendar 2021 was released on this special occasion. The Calendar is in Hindi and Punjabi and give the brief valuable information with photos of the great men of Bahujan Samaj on each monthly page.
On this day school also organises a City Marathon Race of 6 km for students.
