Lucknow, (Asian independent) The Samajwadi Party on Monday staged demonstrations across Uttar Pradesh in support of the farmers’ agitation against the new farm laws.
As the party workers began marching towards the District Collectorate offices to submit memorandums on the issue, they were stopped by the police which had been deployed in large numbers. Barricades had been up at all vantage points.
At some places in Lucknow, Kannauj and Kanpur, clashes were also reported between the protestors and the police.
A number of party leaders were put under house arrest while many were detained.
The Samajwadi Party has been vocal in opposing the farm laws and are supporting the farmers in their ongoing agitation. The party is taking out kisan yatras across thes state to register its protest.
Meanwhile, some farmer groups that tried to enter the state capital to hold a demonstration, were stopped by the police on the outskirts.
The state government had directed all senior police officials to camp at the district headquarters and monitor the situation in view of the protests.
